Being a Foster Parent Really Does Save Lives !
| 'If' there is available
cage space, CAP attempts to keep most animals until they finds a home,
'unless' the animal becomes ill, and sadly most animals eventually become ill. Then unless
the animal has a foster parent, the dog or cat is 'put to sleep'(pts). There is
no place to house a sick animal at CAP Shelter because the cages stay full with the
healthy animals. Therefore when an animal becomes sick, the animal has little
hope for life, 'Unless' a kind-hearted and caring person will be a 'Foster Parent' to
them. Many dogs must be 'put to sleep' because they get Kennel Cough which is simply cured by giving them one antibiotic tablet twice a day for 10 to 14 days, occasionally a few days longer. Providing your own dog(s) has a Kennel Cough shot every six months, there is little to be concerned about that your dog might catch it. It is still wise to confine the sick pet in a separate room for the first few days. (Kennel Cough is similar to people getting a cold.) Anyone who has ever boarded a dog at a Kennel knows most Kennels 'require' that your animal has had the Kennel Cough shot within a six month period. The reason for this and why some of the puppies and dogs awaiting a home at shelters get Kennel Cough is because in 'close quarters' (like shelters and kennels) it can spread if the animals have not had their vaccination.(Note: CAP provides vaccinations to animals that are arriving but some vaccinations may take a few days to take effect.) Many kittens come to the shelter underweight and we also have nursing moms that need a Foster Home to stay at until their kittens are finished nursing. Giving them a temporary Foster Home saves their lives! Also, cats in close quarters very often get Upper Respiratory Infections. This is treated with antibiotics once or twice daily for 7 to l4 days, occasionally longer. The foster cat must be kept in a separate room from other cats in your household. There are no special skills required for being a Foster Parent, just give affection and care for several days. CAP Shelter will provide you with information and if you have questions while you are fostering an animal you can call or write. If medication is needed, CAP provides it and will try to give an estimate of how long the animal will need your care. NOTE: Foster animals must be housed INDOORS in a climate control environment. Being a Foster Parent is one of the most loving and kind things you can do and you receive the wonderful feeling of knowing you are Saving a Life !!! |
These animals would NOT be alive today
if they had not had a person who offered to be a Foster Parent.

If you are not located near
CAP shelter
but want to Help Save Animals, Check with the Petsmart or Petco
Store in your area
to find an organization that is located near you. Most organizations have similar
Foster Parent programs.
(Go by the Petsmart or Petco on a WEEKEND when most groups are
there..)
(Make CERTAIN that they Spay or Neuter ALL
animals BEFORE the animals are adopted!!! Some
groups only make the adopters 'promise' to spay or neuter!!!)
