Dogs & Puppies for Adoption

CAP has many wonderful dogs and puppies available for adoption. Also, new animals arrive every day at the shelter, so our site features only a small number of our residents. For a real canine caper, stop by the shelter, located at 11925 Katy Freeway in Houston, Texas.

Before coming to the shelter, you may want to review our Adoption Information page and print out a copy of our dog adoption application. There's not a moment to waste - the "Love of Your Life" may be waiting for you!

Teddy the 'Lap Dog'

Teddy_RoverOaks_6-24-09HeadTeddy_RoverOaks_6-24-09Sm

A good Samaritan found Teddy, a stray six year old Shar-pei mix who had been hit by a car and left behind. She took in Teddy and gave him TLC and he is now happy and healthy!
Teddy the 'Lap Dog' is very mellow and loves people and his ideal home will welcome a fellow couch potato and provide many cuddles!!  He has a high prey drive needs to be the only pet in the household and is not the dog for going to the dog parks, or otherwise sharing his territory with other animals. He would possibly be okay with another large dog, BUT they would have to be carefully introduced under the guidance of a very experienced dog owner. Teddy has been receiving wonderful care from his foster family and from Rover Oaks (where he is currently staying).  Rover Oaks has been generous with their services and working to bring about Teddy’s best side.    Rover Oaks writes   "We have worked with Teddy on basic obedience, such as “sit”, “down”, “off”, and “leave it” and have worked with him on his leash manners.  Because he is a strong guy, he would do best with an experienced owner in an older kids to adult-only home with a fenced yard.  We all love Teddy at Rover Oaks, and would very much like to find him a “perfect match” with a family of his own."    To meet Teddy or for questions call  281-693-7687 and ask for Joy, Jill or Jacque, or you can email. .

Clay 4036230

clay_4036230_3-16-09_roveroakssmclay_4036230_3-16-09_roveroaks2smClay is a 2 year old, 35 pound cattle dog mix, active and energetic, but a good size.  He is being fostered at Rover Oaks in Katy, where he has worked hard on his basic obedience training.  He is a smart boy who has made a lot of progress since he's been here, but still has a lot of "puppy" characteristics, so needs a home with someone who is experienced with herding breed dogs and has time to continue to work with him on his manners.  He likes other dogs, but plays very rough, so would need a home with like-minded dogs if there were other pets.  He does NOT like cats.  He would do best in a home with older children to adults.  He can climb fences, so would need to be monitored outside, at least at first.  He can be a little fearful of new things, so needs a forever family who can help show him that the world is not such a scary place.  If you have the time, love and patience for this little guy, please contact Rover Oaks and speak with  Jill, Jacque or Joy (281-693-7687) or you can E-Mail.

Emerson 5299288 and Thoreau 5279348

Thoreau5279348_Emerson5279348_10-14-08_SmEmerson (5299288) is a male 4 years Poodle mix about 9 lbs. and Thoreau (5279348) male 4 yrs Chihuahua mix abaout 7 lbs. These two guys like to play and cuddle. They like tug toys, chase and balls. Emerson is the more active. He loves to follow you everywhere and give kisses. He wants to sleep right next to you in bed. He hasn't figured out that he can't get the dogs on TV so he barks at them. He has that Poodle hair so requires regular grooming every 4 to 6 weeks. Thoreau comes up when he wants to be petted and will just sit by you. He kisses occassionally. He sleeps in a comfy chair or sometimes with you in bed. Thoreau is a barker. He hears a noise and is off to bark and Emerson follows right behind. As with most Chihuahua's, Thoreau can be a little protective, so should only be with older children to adults. These two were raised together and MUST be adopted together. They share a special bond. Foster-Jill  email

Brea 7013665

brea_7013665_3-22-09_rbcrBrea is a female poodle, 3 years old and weighs 9 pounds. She is far from being the "perfect" dog, but we are hoping that someone out there will think she is perfect for them.  We do not know a lot about her past, other than she has been passed around a  lot. She does have abandonment issues. The best  situation for her, will be as an only dog, or with a small dog that will not  jump on her, and that will leave her alone. She will do better with a very experienced, single person, that does not have a lot of  company. She will need a very patient person. It takes her a few days to bond with you, but once she does, she is almost obsessive about you. She wants to be touching you constantly.  However, she also has a fear issue, and will snap if she feels  threatened. Therefore, she canNOT be around children of any  age. She would not be a good dog for an apartment, but will need her own, fenced in yard for potty breaks. Because she is so clingy, she may need you to go outside with her, to make sure that she uses the  potty.  Otherwise, she may go in the house. We just do not know why Brea has this odd type of personality, but are hoping  with patience, love, and most of all "stability", she will become that  "perfect" dog. She is with her foster parent and to meet her or for questions, E-Mail.  Foster-Rebecca.

Needing to place an animal?

If you have an animal, either your own or a stray, and the animal needs placing please read about the CAP Weekend Sponsor Program.  CAP does accept animals at the shelter but the Weekend Sponsor Program is a way of ensuring that the animal is not put to sleep.
NOTE: If you are not located near CAP's shelter, you may try a Petsmart or Petco on a Saturday to see if another group in your area offers a similar program.  Please remember that foster homes always stay full and if you use the weekend sponsor program you will need to offer to foster the animal.
